A Fun Vacation Close To Home ~ Visiting Nearby States

This old outside toilet is being carefully preserved.

The historical society bought brand new outside johns so these are for sale.

This is the entrance to the museum and mine which is just below the flea market, concert and multipurpose grounds.

A scarecrow cutout for your garden could be found at this fun flea market.
This was in one of the early setups before the market started or filled up completely. Sunday was a very busy day with vendors spots all full.

There is a museum and mine tour at the Tour Ed Mine located near Tarentum, Pennsylvania. It is an interesting place to visit and close to the Allegheny River off  Ridge Road near Bull Creek Road.  We visited the museum but were not quite into going down into the mine.

If you visit this special attraction on the right weekend you can also attend a large outside antique flea market. Check dates and price in the links below.  Call ahead if you need to. If you have a camper, van or car that you want to sleep in you can park it in the lot for $3.00 on flea market days and stay overnight so that you can shop at the flea market on both Saturday afternoon and early in the morning on Sunday to find the extra good deals. You could visit the mine and museum after you shop around. Food, drinks and kettle corn are available from  vendors on Sundays. Fresh new outside porta-johns and a vintage outside privy which is being carefully preserved by the historical society are available for your other needs.  Carry your own water and food if you arrive on Saturday to shop the market early. Of course you can always leave and go to a local restaurant or stay in a motel. There are many!

The most interesting thing to do at these flea market attractions is to stop and talk to the local people and the historical society members. You can gain a lot of insight into the history of the area. We got a good lesson about the industries along the river last time we asked.

The mine and flea market grounds were used a couple of years ago to produce one of the "My Bloody Valentine" movies. They ceased production on the flea market days but it was interesting to see the buckets of "blood", actors walking about, and production trailers and vehicles for the movie scattered around the mine and flea market area.  Scenes from the towns near the mine are also shown in the movie.

If you are only into heavy retail shopping the brand new and very large Pittsburgh Mills Mall is just off route 28. There are shopping opportunities close to home in Ohio so I can't imagine driving that far to shop in any of the stores that can be found locally. Support the local economy whenever possible.

The mine and flea market are also off route 28 and located together. See information links below. Maps are available on those sites. It takes a bit over 2 hours for us to drive to this area using the Ohio and Pennsylvania turnpikes.
