Poison Ivy ~Toxicodendron radicans ~ Leaves of three, let it be
I noticed that the red leaves of the poison ivy plants that seem prevalent around the edges of our property are starting to peek through the soil. There were even some of these plants in the middle of our yard last year. A mental note will be made of the locations and some sort of eradication program will have to be carried on this year to rid ourselves of these pesky plants.
A few years ago I was digging in the yard in the Spring not realizing that these plants were nearby. They had not leafed out yet. Usually gloves are worn when I dig but this time I was reaching into the dirt. The roots of the poison ivy were full of the poisonous Urushiol juice. It was not a good experience. Experience is a good teacher and this mindless act has never been repeated. You can read more about poison ivy on Wikipedia by clicking on the link below.
