A Welcome Morning Rain


A grey cloud cover kept this morning very dark. It was a welcome sight when a sudden downpour watered my small garden plot in the back yard. There has been very little rain this week. The plant roots are close to the surface because of the abundant rains earlier in the year and the flowers seemed a bit stressed. The sun is peeking through as I write this blog and the next few days will be extremely hot and dry so hand watering will be necessary for the flowers.

Standing Rock in Kent Ohio

Standing Rock is in the Cuyahoga River in Kent behind the Standing Rock Cemetery. When I was a child on Wolcott Avenue in Kent we would go in small groups riding our bikes or walking through the cemetery to see the large rock. We lived only a few blocks from the cemetery so it was a short trip. We never worried about going through the cemetery alone.  A bypass for the Cuyahoga River now flows around the dam on Main Street in Kent to speed up the river to improve the water quality. The level of the river has been cut down drastically because of the bypass. Old Downtown Diners and other Things

Many of us can remember the downtown diners that may have been in our own home towns. This diner is located downtown in Lisbon, Ohio. It always seems to have a lot of cars parked near it. It is probably a gathering place for retirees where they sip down their morning coffee and eat eggs and toast made to their order as they trade ideas and news with long time friends and associates. My home town of Kent, Ohio had a few diners but they are only memories as they have been cleared away for new buildings. I remember sitting on the old red leather or vinyl upholstered stools that had swivel tops. You could order as much or little as you wanted. The waitress might be someone that you knew well. Jukeboxes on the counter or in a corner of the diner waited for you to slip your nickel into the slot and play your favorite tunes. It was a friendly place. Blue Skies ~ Time To Clean the Gutters

A job that keeps coming back! A very wet yard! There have been very few days this month that it has not rained. The yard is saturated and makes a squishing sound no matter where we walk. Russ has cleaned the gutters in the rain in the past but they have been let go for a month or longer. It was time to muck them out again. The wet slimy gunk was flying from his gloved hands as he circled the house. Fortunately our gutters are not up high. The forecast for rain every day next week is not what we really wanted to hear but weather is something we can't control.  Done for this time!
