This Makes Me SO MAD!!!!
I am so lucky to have a husband who is a pretty good mechanic. We drive only vintage cars that he can easily fix. If he can't fix it we have a back yard mechanic neighbor/friend who can.
I overheard the conversation of a distraught senior citizen lady this morning while I was at the supermarket. She had taken her car to a chain oil change place to get the oil changed. The car ran fine when she drove it into the shop.
The oil change place called her later and said that her radiator fan had quit working and the car could not possible be driven anywhere until it was fixed. The price would be $1400.00. As she talked to her friends in the market they suggested some independent shops that they had used that would probably be cheaper and honest.
She was unable to think her way out of letting the shop that had her car fix it. My suggestion would have been to go to the place that had her car so that she could keep eye on the car and call a tow truck or perhaps get a free tow from AAA if she had that.
She could just tell the oil change place that she could not afford them. They can't stop her from taking her car. Don't let them touch a thing on the car while this is being done. Have the car transported to the independent shop with the good reputation and if it actually needs fixed let them do it. It will probably be less expensive and it may involve a simple thing like plugging in a wire that may have been disconnected "accidentally" at the oil change shop.
It just makes me so mad that senior citizens and women are taken advantage of. This is not the first instance that I have heard of. Women seem to be the biggest targets.
There are still honest repair shops but you have to ask around to find out where they are.
