A Welcome Return of a Plant


The extra harsh cold Winter caused some plants in our garden and yard to die. A large old rue plant and a couple of perennials that were were planted late in the Fall were victims of the weather. I am more sad about the loss of a 12 foot high Concolor fir tree in the front yard. The heat and dry weather last Fall did not allow these flowers in the garden to thrive. I really thought that the plant shown above died soon after it was planted. It was purchased at a flea market as a flower plant that was freshly dug from the flea market seller's garden. The leaves are reddish-green and the flowers are the five little flowers that extend in a spray from the top. There are tiny little yellow centers in each of those 5 flowers. This is a very showy plant for the garden because of the leaf color. The flowers almost look like leaves.

Standing Rock is in the Cuyahoga River in Kent behind the Standing Rock Cemetery. When I was a child on Wolcott Avenue in Kent we would go in small groups riding our bikes or walking through the cemetery to see the large rock. We lived only a few blocks from the cemetery so it was a short trip. We never worried about going through the cemetery alone.  A bypass for the Cuyahoga River now flows around the dam on Main Street in Kent to speed up the river to improve the water quality. The level of the river has been cut down drastically because of the bypass. Ripples of water now flow over rocks where the river once was deep. It was deep enough years ago so that you could not see the rocks on the bottom.  Back then the water rose up under the jutting ledge near the top of the large stone. The Old School House in Peninsula Ohio

The old Boston Township schoolhouse in Peninsula, Ohio has been nicely preserved though it seemed a rather depressing looking place as we passed it yesterday. It was cloudy at the time and some granular snow was falling. The old building is now used for town functions and a great contradance takes place there from time to time. It makes me happy to see the preservation of the historic old buildings. I'm certain this school holds many memories, good and bad, for the people who attended school there.

Blue Skies ~ Time To Clean the Gutters

A job that keeps coming back! A very wet yard! There have been very few days this month that it has not rained. The yard is saturated and makes a squishing sound no matter where we walk. Russ has cleaned the gutters in the rain in the past but they have been let go for a month or longer. It was time to muck them out again. The wet slimy gunk was flying from his gloved hands as he circled the house. Fortunately our gutters are not up high. The forecast for rain every day next week is not what we really wanted to hear but weather is something we can't control.  Done for this time!
