I don't want to see it go!



Bare branches are a stark contrast to the colors in the maple next to them. I just love seeing the Fall colors and soon this beautiful display will be over. The ground is getting littered with layers of leaves that Russ blows away each day with the Atwater Strong gas powered leaf blower that we acquired in the bed of a 1949 Chevy pickup truck that we bought many years ago. What a great bonus that turned out to be. The blower has had to have work done from time to time but it is very powerful.

The leaves are also clogging the gutters so that makes another job necessary. Fortunately gutters on  our 1 1/2 story 1950s home are low to the ground.






As soon as the leaves on the Japanese Red Maple that is outside of our breezeway door turn the lovely red-orange color they fall off the tree. The whole tree will turn a brilliant color in just a few days and then it will rain the  leaves onto the pad in front of the breezeway forming a thick carpet of red. The leaf blower will have to go into action again.

We will just have to review the pictures in the blogs to remind us of how beautiful Fall can be.

The Old School House in Peninsula Ohio

The old Boston Township schoolhouse in Peninsula, Ohio has been nicely preserved though it seemed a rather depressing looking place as we passed it yesterday. It was cloudy at the time and some granular snow was falling. The old building is now used for town functions and a great contradance takes place there from time to time. It makes me happy to see the preservation of the historic old buildings. I'm certain this school holds many memories, good and bad, for the people who attended school there.

Standing Rock in Kent Ohio

Standing Rock is in the Cuyahoga River in Kent behind the Standing Rock Cemetery. When I was a child on Wolcott Avenue in Kent we would go in small groups riding our bikes or walking through the cemetery to see the large rock. We lived only a few blocks from the cemetery so it was a short trip. We never worried about going through the cemetery alone.  A bypass for the Cuyahoga River now flows around the dam on Main Street in Kent to speed up the river to improve the water quality. The level of the river has been cut down drastically because of the bypass. Ripples of water now flow over rocks where the river once was deep. It was deep enough years ago so that you could not see the rocks on the bottom.  Back then the water rose up under the jutting ledge near the top of the large stone. Transplanting Ajuga for Ground Cover ~ A Wet Yard

There seems to be a great deal of the Ajuga ground cover growing in our yard this year. The plants are taller and more lush than usual due to the amount of rain that has fallen. Today was a good day to transplant some of the ground cover plants to other places in the yard. The ground is saturated so the plants are easy to remove from the ground and the soft dirt yields easily to the shovel for transplanting. A couple of dry days with sunshine should dry some things out but the picture below shows the tracks from the old yard tractor. Only some areas of the yard are being cut off today. Perhaps these areas will dry off more before the next rain falls. The grass is getting quite high in some spots.
