A Fun Time at an Impromptu Dinner


We had a great time night at out impromptu dinner. A quick cleanup was done in the kitchen and bath. Fresh towels and clean mirror in the bathroom made the house company ready. We had pizza, blue corn chips and guacamole dip, fruit and a light dessert. 


The gals sat on the breezeway and visited until the mosquitoes drove us into the house. The hot wet weather has yielded a bumper crop of the little biting insects. The rain today should add to the ideal conditions for an increase in the mosquito population.  It is difficult to walk outside without getting bitten.

How I make a pomander Ingredients: oranges and some whole cloves. Whole cloves can be purchased for less in bulk containers or in a store that sells in bulk quantities. Poke a hole in the orange with a sharp pin or other sharp object and insert a whole clove. You can make patterns on the orange with the cloves or cover them almost completely as shown in the picture. A lime was used for the smaller pomander. Thinner skinned lemons would work well also. The cloves preserve the fruit. There are recipes for rolling the finished pomander in powdered spices but I found that messy and not necessary. I prefer the simple and traditional way of making them. The sharp cloves are a bit hard on the fingers so you may wish to wear some protection. If you poke the hole you can let your children push in the cloves. The Old School House in Peninsula Ohio

The old Boston Township schoolhouse in Peninsula, Ohio has been nicely preserved though it seemed a rather depressing looking place as we passed it yesterday. It was cloudy at the time and some granular snow was falling. The old building is now used for town functions and a great contradance takes place there from time to time. It makes me happy to see the preservation of the historic old buildings. I'm certain this school holds many memories, good and bad, for the people who attended school there.

Transplanting Ajuga for Ground Cover ~ A Wet Yard

There seems to be a great deal of the Ajuga ground cover growing in our yard this year. The plants are taller and more lush than usual due to the amount of rain that has fallen. Today was a good day to transplant some of the ground cover plants to other places in the yard. The ground is saturated so the plants are easy to remove from the ground and the soft dirt yields easily to the shovel for transplanting. A couple of dry days with sunshine should dry some things out but the picture below shows the tracks from the old yard tractor. Only some areas of the yard are being cut off today. Perhaps these areas will dry off more before the next rain falls. The grass is getting quite high in some spots.
