Whitehall New York Trip 1991 ~~ Great Thrift Shop Find

That hill across the lake is in Vermont.

Whitehall New York

Our 1991 vacation trip to Whitehall in New York not only yielded great scenery and interesting sights, we also made an incredible buy at a thrift shop.

We stayed at a cabin that was owned by my husbands dad at the Southern end of Lake Champlain. He called his place THE ROCK. The lake is very narrow at this spot just before it goes into the locks in town.

We did not see Champy in the lake but the roar of the engines from the tugboats pushing the barges and large recreational boats going into and out of the locks in town shook the cabin night and day. A busy railroad track behind the cabin in a cut through the rocks added to the shaking and noise as the trains traveled through and blew their whistles when they got to the road next to the cabin. The land on the other side of the lake is in Vermont. We did venture into Vermont during our stay. During one stop for lunch we were asked if there were any trees in Ohio. The query came from a young waitress so I assume that she had not been in our part of Ohio.

We went into the town to use the laundromat and see the sights. We watched a boat go through the locks then started walking. A lady stepped out of the door of one of the buildings near the locks and asked us to come in. She was rather trusting and so were we. Her four story building was next to the water front. Her home was a bed and breakfast and she just wanted to give us the tour. It had served a stopping place for several presidents. She had candid pictures of herself with these presidents on the wall. The rooms were carefully decorated with antiques that were local to the area. We are not sure why she choose to bring us in off the street but it was a nice diversion while we waited for the clothes  to finish drying.

After leaving her home we looked across the water and saw a white truck pull in front of the local thrift store and throw a large rug onto the sidewalk. We hastily walked across the bridge and examined the dusty red rug and asked the price. It was $50. The 9 x 12 foot rug was oriental in style. The thrift store proprietor may have thought it was one of the newer rugs but it was actually a hand made oriental rug made in Persia and tagged as such.

We put it into the Suburban which can been seen parked along the street in the second picture. The green vehicle with the cream colored bottom is ours. The rug was extremely dirty but it cleaned up very well with a steam cleaning.

Our granddaughters are laying on the rug in the bottom picture feigning sleep in a December 1995 picture.

Whitehall, New York is the birth place of the United States Navy. If you would like to read more about this historic town click on the word WHITEHALL below.
