A Discarded Bouquet of Burrs ~ A Good Idea was Not So Good



Sometimes good ideas are not what they seem at first. It was my intention to have a nice dried bouquet for the breezeway. I picked some long stem burrs from an area in the blackberry patch and started to bring them in to arrange them. I then noticed that some of the pieces of the burr were digging into my shirt and sticking my skin right through the cloth. I had scratched my arm on a blackberry thorn and my arm was bleeding.  As I was pulling the burrs from my clothes and wiping off the blood I changed my idea of what I should or should not bring to the house. I discarded the bouquet in a wild cherry stump in back of the barn and that is where it will stay. What a bad idea that was. There are not enough hours of light in the day to get all the work around the yard done but we worked non-stop today both in the house and outside. The fantastic weather makes it easier to keep going.

Standing Rock is in the Cuyahoga River in Kent behind the Standing Rock Cemetery. When I was a child on Wolcott Avenue in Kent we would go in small groups riding our bikes or walking through the cemetery to see the large rock. We lived only a few blocks from the cemetery so it was a short trip. We never worried about going through the cemetery alone.  A bypass for the Cuyahoga River now flows around the dam on Main Street in Kent to speed up the river to improve the water quality. The level of the river has been cut down drastically because of the bypass. Ripples of water now flow over rocks where the river once was deep. It was deep enough years ago so that you could not see the rocks on the bottom.  Back then the water rose up under the jutting ledge near the top of the large stone. The Old School House in Peninsula Ohio

The old Boston Township schoolhouse in Peninsula, Ohio has been nicely preserved though it seemed a rather depressing looking place as we passed it yesterday. It was cloudy at the time and some granular snow was falling. The old building is now used for town functions and a great contradance takes place there from time to time. It makes me happy to see the preservation of the historic old buildings. I'm certain this school holds many memories, good and bad, for the people who attended school there.

Blue Skies ~ Time To Clean the Gutters

A job that keeps coming back! A very wet yard! There have been very few days this month that it has not rained. The yard is saturated and makes a squishing sound no matter where we walk. Russ has cleaned the gutters in the rain in the past but they have been let go for a month or longer. It was time to muck them out again. The wet slimy gunk was flying from his gloved hands as he circled the house. Fortunately our gutters are not up high. The forecast for rain every day next week is not what we really wanted to hear but weather is something we can't control.  Done for this time!
